White Cane
Awareness Day 14th October
2011 |
Members of Eastbourne Blind Society User Group were involved in organising the 2010 White Cane Awareness Day in the Arndale Centre. Led by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mike Thompson, the local MP, Stephen Lloyd, Deirdre Dean, chief executive of Eastbourne Blind Society and Adrian Ley, chairman of Eastbourne Blind Society, about 40 members and friends paraded through the centre and the pedestrian precinct outside. |
| Donning simulation spectacles and carrying white canes during the parade made our VIP guests highly aware of the challenges and frustrations faced every day by vision impaired people. The Deputy Mayor commented that he was now more appreciative of how unfriendly thoroughfares are to VIPs. | |
The parade and display, providing information about white canes, attracted a good deal of interest. |

by VIPs who have little or no support from carers. Whilst
walking unescorted, he almost walked into a glass barrier in the Arndale
Centre. |
| Stephen Lloyd, MP, said "It was a powerful and challenging experience walking round the Arndale Centre with members of Eastbourne Blind Society. I was wearing special glasses which gave me some idea of what it must be like to be visually impaired. Raising awareness of the issue is just one of the many practical areas of support provided by Eastbourne Blind Society. Well done to all!" | |
